  • Natural Disasters...

Natural disasters happen all over the world...  Some have caused chaos, pain and destruction to people's lives... We've seen or heard of places around the world be hit ... (i.e Katrina, tsunamis just Japan and so many more...)

When I was in college I remember our band director had a home in Florida which was hit by a hurricane and he had to leave us for a small while to fix it ... I'm sure it wasn't a major loss but nonetheless it was hit by a hurricane. I know many people have had experiences, losses of homes and I hope not many have lost family...

How do you prepare for a hurricane?

Last week as we were passing by Denver, the Airport had quite a few tornado shelters so I started thinking... Well I've never experienced anything close to a tornado and even though in the high school where I teach music they've had a few tornado warnings... I never took them serious here in California. All I really know of a tornado is from "twister" lol.  Sure I've seen some try and develop here but they just never have... it's never been something I've concerned myself with.

How do you prepare or what are some safety tips for a tornado?

With, the recent hit of an earthquake in the east coast... I'm glad that I came back from the DC area on Sunday. But, I've grown up with earthquakes and to me they're not a big deal. (to me) I still see people freak out even though they've experienced them for part of their world but you just never know how they're going to hit... I somehow feel more weary going such a long time without an earthquake than feeling the ground rumble and shake here and there... It's a comfort of knowing it's happened.. (I don't know why, I guess it's something I don't fear.) yes, Earthquake do cause a lot of chaos... but now we've found out what natural disaster doesn't....

I remember when we were younger in school they would always have us prepared with a lot of water and foods that would last a long time in case something happened during the school year... it sure was a treat when we would get our goody bag at the end of the year...

But, What would you recommend as a safety procedure during an earthquake or to have prepared for after?

One thing for sure is stay away from anywhere things can fall on top of you so a doorway would be safe, no trees, or electric lines, have a safety route to a safe place out of your home just in case.

The worst one in my mind not that these other ones are any less would be a volcanic eruption. I guess my fear of burning alive just gets the best of me ...

So, if I had to pick one... I think I would stick with the earthquakes that happen in California and the one that would that I would never want to experience is a volcano...

If you had a choice of one, which one would it be and why?

And which one would you least want to experience and why?

  • The natural disaster I dont want to experience is the polar shift in which the magnetic field of the earth says "bye bye" and and lets the suns radiation bake us.

  • and thanks for the rec!

  • I've been through dozens of tornadoes. My family doesn't even go for shelter anymore. A few years ago my mom and I stood in our backyard and watched a squirrel flying through the air. I'm pretty sure I'd freak the fuck out during my first earthquake.

  • @SlackerSociety - That's true... I guess I was thinking too small. That is one I would hate, being burned alive and all :/

    You're welcome ;)

@GodlessLiberal - A squirrel huh... that sounds pretty interesting. I'm sure I wouldn't be too fearful of tornadoes unless they look so massive they'd eat us alive... lol but that sounds like quite an experience. :) And earthquakes aren't that bad... I guess it also depends on the structure and whether the foundation can handle it. I'm sure it wouldn't be as scary... if you've ever felt an train pass by, it almost feels the same at times... well if they're a bit circular motion or side to side, the up and down ones can be nauseating.... I guess they vary a little but not too bad. :)

  • ........hmmm there have been plenty times when I don't even feel the quakes anymore....

  • I bought a weather radio so I could keep tabs on the weather.  When there is a warning I usually go around and unplug things, open windows, get my cats in a kennel and then if the siren blows I go into my basement where I keep a radio and flashlight in case the power goes out.

  • @GodlessLiberal - I was in St. Peter a few years back when they got hit by a tornado and I was standing outside with a friend's wife watching everything and then we started seeing eaves and parts of roofs flying by so we took shelter.

  • I haven't really been through a natural disaster. If I ever find myself in the middle of one - I hope it's a mild one. :)

  • @Snoog420 - it's been a small while since we've had one worth noticing here in Ca so it makes sense. When they are I feel 'em they have a special feel to them... some even make you a little nauseous with the movement pattern.

@godfatherofgreenbay - Yes, a very good idea. Unplug and have a battery powered radio and flash light. Do you also have water and food in the shelter just in case? Where do you  live?
@Zissu25 -  I think that's what we all hope right. I mean if we were ever hit by one we wouldn't want it to be extreme like those affected by Katrina or the Japan Tsunami or how Florida who keeps getting hit by Hurricanes. . I've never had a big natural disaster happen either... but I can remember destruction by an earthquake well many around the world but in CA, the earthquake in Northridge comes to mind when I was young... My sis slept through the earthquake thinking I was just jumping on the bed...

  • You really can't do anything to prevent them from happening so there isn't much else to do than protect yourself or go out and enjoy the beauty of a very angry Mother Nature. I plan on going to the ocean the day the hurricane is closest to RI, I love that shit.

Tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanoes scare the shit out of me. I never used to worry about tornadoes and earthquakes because 'they didn't happen here'. However, MA had a tornado this summer and we just felt an earthquake yesterday and this weekend we're getting something of a hurricane.

    ...gotta love this shit.

  • I'd pick a hurricane, as I've been through so many of them.  The quake was not bad here in New Jersey, but I worry for my friends in VA.  I don't think they had it too badly, though.

  • Hmm worst would be flood orTsunami, hard to avoid VERY damaging and horrible dirty water afterwards with all many of disease possibilities.

And I think i agree that the best would be Earthquake...or maybe Twisters since you can either avoid or hide relatively easily from them.

  • I want NONE of it, and I guess I am lucky because have no experience dealing with them.

  • I'd say anybody would have a better chance of surviving a hurricane because of the days of warning ahead.  Even if they just popped up out of nowhere like tornadoes can do sometimes you still have good chance of traveling through it without getting knocked over or swept up and thrown away or around to get to shelter.

  • I remember doing the tornado thing before.  Not the most pleasant experience.

  • I'm in Wisconsin.  I have plenty of canned food but I don't have water.  I guess I've figured that I have access to plenty around here so I don't buy any.

  • @AlluringAddiction - haha, I love an angry mother nature... I'm sure there is nothing we can do to prevent just be safe I guess... Be careful when there is a hurricane though. I love the wonders that nature creates... I would like to see a tornado and a hurricane or I don't know about a hurricane but I would like to see a tornado somewhat close. :)

@RighteousBruin - Why a hurricane? I guess most people close to the east coast would choose a hurricane.

@BFB1131 - Yes, tsunamis would be bad and flooding would ruin everything... well you can avoid a tornado. I don't think you can avoid an earthquake. I guess the dangerous thing in California is the San Andre's fault which can split the Ca into 2 if it were strong enough. An earthquake can be dangerous but I guess we just hope for the best.
@RestlessButterfly - I would definitely choose none as well but they do happen and you're right, you are lucky! I  hope it continues that way. Stay safe.

@bluepillorredpill - You're right. I never thought about the warning. that's the great thing of a warning. You can go buy supplies and keep your fam safe. Good thinking! :)

@democrab - I'm sure it would be pleasant. :/ small shakes aren't bad but everything can cause so much damage.

@godfatherofgreenbay - Well I'm glad you have food. :) Very smart. Wisconsin, interesting. Have you lived there your whole life? Is it very green? See I don't like the dull green in California, that's why I want to move.

  • It's fairly green where I live although because of the lack of water this summer there are trees that are already starting to change.  I have at least one tree that is changing and a few of my berry plants are starting to change.

  • @godfatherofgreenbay - a drought this year ... boo!! Is it hot or fresh at least? I'm sure watching a tree change is an amazing view. :)

  • earthquakes- less carnage and  or more chances to get away- hurricanes flood and wreck a bunch  to much, tornados are absolute far scarrier even if they're smaller by comparison....and volcanos stink...literally enough to kill sometimes.

  • Been around during a tornado or two, but not directly where they hit.  I guess I'm most curious about being in a hurricane, but have desire to die in one.  Volcanic eruption...screw that.  I read about Pompeii in High School Latin class, and saw the pictures of sculptures that were created as people were instantly turned into ash.  It made perfect sculptures of those people frozen in time, just like casting melted wax in a mold.

  • @starmanjones - How do you run away to safety when everything in the ground is shaking? lol

@lonelywanderer2 - Wow, a couple tornados huh... I want to witness some... they truly look intriguing... I don't want to be where a hurricane hits... I guess all natural disasters can lead to rebuilding of a home. And I agree, Volcanoes... no thank you!! And people becoming ashes... not a pretty thought but it''s happened and I hope it was as fast and painless as possible.

  • Probably a tornado. I live in Texas and we hardly ever get big big scary tornadoes..as per living in this great state (whatever Lol) we know hot to take care of ourselves when a tornado shows up. There was a particular scary one a few months back..but luckily, it doesn't happen too much.

We are part of the great tornado alley ;P
I don't want to experience anything else. I'm never living near mountains, coasts, islands or on fault lines. Ours is pretty dead at least the one beneath us

  • @Hinase - Do you have warning for tornadoes? I was watching twister lol... the coasts aren't bad but I really want to go to Utah or Colorado to live myself. I'm open to it all but I really dislike the heat that's it... I don't mind anything else well with exception of volcanoes...

  • @pinktiger335 - We do actually. I hate the heat too but it is what it is and I still love Texas. I think if you go up that far north, be prepared for the winters. I heard they are killer. I only lived in Kansas for a short time but the winters were horrible.

  • I wouldn't wanna experience any natural disaster.. I live in the Netherlands. Nothing ever happens here. The only natural disaster that could happen over here are floodings, because we're way below the sea level and several large rivers go into sea in the Netherlands. But we have done loads against those. And if something where to happen in my town... I live on the third floor. Should take a while till the water reaches this height. lol

  • @Novietaaa - Wow, being below sea level, I can understand the flooding. But, still I would be scared to live in 3rd floor but it makes sense. I'm glad you have experienced any of these which is great. I wish no one ever had to but it's part of nature's beauty. =D I mean as long as no one is around I don't mind those happening and capturing the beauty from a distance.
